A pedestrian tragically lost his life on Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a commuter train near downtown Riverside.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Washington Street and the Riverside (91) Freeway, as confirmed by the Riverside Police Department.
Officer Ryan Railsback, spokesperson for the department, informed City News Service that the individual was hit by a Metrolink train. However, it remains unclear why the pedestrian was on the tracks at the time of the incident.
Upon impact, the train promptly came to a halt, and paramedics from the Riverside Fire Department arrived at the scene within minutes. Despite their efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the site of the accident.
The identity of the victim has not yet been disclosed.
Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among the passengers aboard the train.
As a result of the incident, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks in the vicinity were temporarily closed. It remains uncertain when train operations will resume later in the afternoon.
