WHAT IT IS
Zantac may have just been an over-the-counter heartburn remedy, but a recent FDA study has concluded that consuming the drug causes dangerous levels N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) to enter a person’s system, a chemical that can drastically increase the risk of a number of cancers.
Zantac has been a market leader amongst over-the-counter and prescription drugs in the US since it was introduced in 1981. It’s been widely prescribed for issues such as ulcers, acid reflux and even allergies in some instances.
But since the discovery of the increased risk of cancer resulting from taking Zantac regularly, the drug has been stripped from pharmacy shelves, and what was once one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the US is now unavailable for public consumption.
COMPLICATIONS & SYMPTOMS
Ranitidine, the main active ingredient in Zantac and other equivalents, when in contact with water, creates a chemical reaction creating NDMA. Despite claims that the manufacturers had this information available to them during manufacturing, this information was withheld from consumers causing a danger to public health.
N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a harmful chemical that wreaks havoc on a person’s body. With short term exposure leading to nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps and long term exposure leading to a whole host of problems from liver failure, hepatitis and cancer. With such a dangerous chemical at play, the manufacturers of Zantac showed a blatant disregard for human life.
