[12-21-2023] Indio DUI Crash Claims Life of Local Resident

INDIO, CA — A tragic crash in Indio resulted in the death of 53-year-old Martin Gutierrez, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident. A 36-year-old man, Alexander Frank Ortega, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, facing charges of murder.

The incident occurred on Indio Springs Parkway east of Golf Center Parkway, prompting a response from officers at 9:45 p.m. The preliminary investigation revealed that a white GMC pickup truck, traveling west on Indio Springs Parkway, crossed lanes and collided with a white Saturn Sudan occupied by Gutierrez and a female passenger.

The collision was severe, requiring extraction efforts by Indio Fire and Cal Fire. Both occupants of the Saturn were transported to the hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, Gutierrez’s injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital at 10:25 p.m.

Alexander Frank Ortega, the driver of the pickup truck, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio with a $2 million bail bond.

The Indio Police Department Traffic Team closed Indio Springs Parkway during the investigation, and all roadways were reopened by sunrise. The incident underscores the grave consequences of driving under the influence and the importance of road safety. Authorities continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
