WINCHESTER, CA — Following a weekend crash involving a truck full of teens from Murrieta and Canyon Lake, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has issued a reminder about the dangers and illegality of riding in a pickup bed.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Elliot Road, just south of Keller Road.
Upon arrival, officers found a rolled 2008 Ford Ranger and six teenagers, some of whom were seriously injured.
A preliminary investigation by the CHP revealed that a 17-year-old boy from Murrieta was driving the truck southbound on Elliot at approximately 25 mph when he veered onto the right dirt shoulder and lost control. The truck spun, fishtailed, and ultimately rolled over.
According to the CHP, three teens were in the cab— the driver, a 16-year-old girl, and a 17-year-old boy. All three, who were wearing seatbelts, were uninjured and are from Murrieta.
However, the three teens riding in the truck’s bed were ejected during the crash and sustained injuries. A 16-year-old girl from Murrieta and a 17-year-old boy from Canyon Lake were taken to Wildomar’s Inland Valley Hospital with major injuries. Another 17-year-old boy from Murrieta suffered minor injuries.
The CHP stressed the importance of following road safety rules and reminded parents about their free “Start Smart” teen driver classes, which provide comprehensive traffic safety education aimed at saving young lives.
The next class is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on May 20 at Temecula City Hall, 41000 Main Street. To register, email Officer Mike Lassig at MLassig@chp.ca.gov or call 951-466-4300. Officer Lassig can also provide details on future classes.
