Phoenix, AZ — A dangerous incident unfolded late on December 24, 2024, when a man in a black Chevy Tahoe was reported firing a handgun at eastbound vehicles while driving west on I-10 near 24th Street.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZ DPS) Metro Central District Captain, troopers received multiple 911 calls from witnesses who observed the suspect indiscriminately shooting into oncoming traffic. The suspect did not appear to be targeting any specific vehicle.
One of the witnesses began following the suspect’s vehicle, providing information about his travel direction. Responding troopers, assisted by the Phoenix Police helicopter, quickly located the suspect traveling north on I-17 near Thomas Road.
Troopers initiated a high-risk traffic stop, and the suspect exited at Indian School Road, pulling into a business parking lot. Following commands from officers, the adult male suspect complied and was taken into custody without incident.
Upon searching the vehicle, troopers found alcoholic beverages, a handgun with signs of recent use, and multiple spent shell casings that matched the caliber of the firearm involved.
At this time, there are no reports of gunshot victims, and investigators are working to determine whether the suspect was impaired during the incident.
The suspect remains in custody as authorities continue their investigation.
