On Saturday, December 14, 2024, at approximately 10:50 p.m., firefighters and police responded to reports of a vegetation fire near Studebaker Road and 2nd Street in Long Beach. The blaze occurred in the Los Cerritos Wetlands area, close to nearby oil fields, raising significant concerns.
The fire, fueled by burning palm trees, caused embers to fall, igniting additional patches of vegetation. Large flames engulfed several areas, creating a dramatic scene that prompted the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) to block traffic to ensure public safety.
The Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) worked diligently for over an hour to bring the fire under control. Despite their efforts, the scene remained hazardous as investigators began assessing the cause. LBFD has labeled the incident a suspected case of arson, although details regarding a potential suspect have not yet been disclosed.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to help identify those responsible.
