At approximately 10:45 p.m. on December 13, 2024, a serious multi-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Indian School Road and Interstate 17 in Phoenix, prompting responses from Phoenix Police, DPS, and Phoenix Fire crews.
According to preliminary reports, the incident began when a sedan collided with a pickup truck in the eastbound lanes of Indian School Road. The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn and strike a concrete barrier, while the sedan veered off the roadway, crashing through a chain-link fence and falling into the active travel lanes of I-17.
The sedan was then struck by a southbound pickup truck on the Interstate, setting off a chain reaction that led to several additional minor collisions as drivers attempted to avoid the wreckage.
Phoenix Fire crews worked to extricate the driver of the overturned pickup truck and multiple occupants trapped inside the sedan. At least three individuals were transported to local hospitals with severe injuries.
In response to the collision, southbound I-17 has been closed, with all traffic being diverted off the highway at Camelback Road. Additionally, Indian School Road is closed in both directions near the I-17 interchange.
The Phoenix Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit has taken command of the investigation, which is expected to keep officers and detectives on-site throughout the night and into the early morning hours. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
