A man armed with a gun was fatally shot following a standoff and gunfire exchange with Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers on Sunday evening.
Officers responded to a call at approximately 3:15 p.m. reporting an armed man in the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue. Upon arrival, they located a man matching the description provided in the call. Despite extensive attempts to deescalate the situation, including involving a hostage negotiator and a Mental Evaluation Team, the suspect remained uncooperative.
After over two hours of negotiations, the man drew a firearm, prompting a shootout with four LBPD officers. The suspect was struck multiple times. Officers administered first aid, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
During the exchange, one officer was shot in the arm. They were treated at a hospital and later released.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, and body-worn camera footage from the incident is under review. The LBPD plans to release the footage to the public in due course.
This officer-involved shooting will undergo a comprehensive internal review, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation, as per standard protocol.
