A tragic high-speed crash on Sycamore Canyon Boulevard in Riverside on Tuesday evening resulted in the death of a passenger and left the driver hospitalized.
According to Sgt. Emilio Angulo of the Riverside Police Department’s Traffic Bureau, officers were dispatched to the scene near Cottonwood Avenue at around 6:15 P.M. following a report from the city’s Public Safety Communications Center. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals trapped in a 2017 Nissan 370Z sports car.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver, a 29-year-old Moreno Valley resident, was traveling south on Sycamore Canyon Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the roadway and collided with a tree.
Emergency responders freed both occupants from the wreckage and transported them to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the passenger succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead. The driver, also from Moreno Valley, remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Sgt. Angulo noted that it is currently unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the crash to contact the Riverside Police Department.
