In the early hours of October 24, 2024, at approximately 12:09 AM, a significant fire broke out at the Historic Harris Building, located near 2nd Street and E Street in San Bernardino. Responding units from San Bernardino County Fire arrived to find heavy black smoke rising from the building’s roof, signaling the severity of the situation.
Initial reports from transients exiting the building indicated that up to five individuals might still be inside. However, after thorough searches, no one was found on the premises. Due to the building’s size and complex layout, a second and third alarm were issued to request additional personnel and resources. Access challenges added to the firefighting efforts, as the building’s doors were covered in reinforced steel, delaying entry.
As the fire progressed, the structural integrity of the building worsened, prompting firefighters to implement a zone retreat. Shortly afterward, the roof began to sag and ultimately collapsed, intensifying the need for careful control efforts. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze approximately two and a half hours after the initial dispatch.
The incident saw a substantial response, including fourteen engines, four ladder trucks, four chief officers, an investigator, and an incident support rig. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, though the team undertook an extensive overhaul process to manage the aftermath of the roof collapse.
An investigation into the fire’s cause is currently underway.
