On October 20, 2024, at approximately 5:00 AM, a serious single-vehicle crash occurred on the Northbound South Mountain 202 ramp leading to the Eastbound I-10 in Phoenix. Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers and Phoenix Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, where they discovered a Ford Mustang split in half, obstructing the transition ramp.
The driver, who has not yet been identified, was ejected from the vehicle and found in the landscape west of the ramp. Despite the rapid response from emergency services, Phoenix Fire pronounced the driver deceased at the scene.
Initial reports suggest that the Mustang collided with the traffic barrier at the split between the Eastbound I-10 traffic ramp and the Eastbound I-10 HOV ramp. Speed is being investigated as a potential contributing factor in the crash.
As a result of the collision, the Northbound 202 to Eastbound I-10 ramp was closed, and traffic was rerouted onto the Eastbound I-10 HOV ramp. Fortunately, the westbound I-10 transition ramp remains unaffected. It is unclear when the transition ramp will reopen, as DPS troopers continue their investigation into the crash.
