A tragic train accident occurred late on the night of October 14, 2024, at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Harbor Drive, resulting in serious injuries to at least two individuals.
The incident began when a BNS&F train blocked access to 5th Avenue near the San Diego Convention Center, causing a group of people to become impatient while waiting. In an attempt to bypass the stationary train, some individuals began moving over and under the train cars. However, as the train suddenly began to move, two people were caught off guard and fell.
First responders quickly arrived on the scene after receiving a 911 call, discovering a woman trapped under the train. She had suffered a severe leg injury, with her leg being severed, and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. The woman’s condition is currently unknown.
A man involved in the incident sustained a head injury but left the scene before emergency personnel arrived. Authorities were initially unaware of the train’s movement, and the train engineer continued traveling north without knowledge of the incident. The train was later stopped in the northern part of San Diego for further investigation.
San Diego Police Department shut down Harbor Drive in both directions as they investigated the scene, and the area remained closed for several hours. Investigators are still working to piece together the full details of the accident, while the public is urged to exercise caution near train tracks.
