A tense standoff between deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood station and an armed suspect came to a close late last night, culminating in a dramatic pursuit that unfolded near Heartwell Park.
The incident began earlier when deputies were alerted to an armed suspect wanted for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery at the Carwood Shopping Center. The suspect managed to elude authorities, prompting a pursuit that ended on Carson Avenue, near Carfax Avenue, around 11:45 PM.
During the standoff, deputies deployed less-lethal pepper balls into the suspect’s vehicle in an attempt to subdue him. As the situation escalated, the suspect exited the car with his dog and fled on foot. Deputies quickly gave chase and apprehended the man after discharging their weapons, striking both him and his dog in the process.
While the suspect was taken into custody, his dog remains unaccounted for, prompting concern within the local community. Authorities are actively working to locate the animal, which was seen fleeing the scene during the chaos.
