On the night of October 5, 2024, around 11:45 PM, a high-speed street racing incident involving three vehicles took place in Tempe. A trooper observed two black Dodge vehicles—a Charger and a Challenger—along with a white Dodge Challenger racing westbound on I-10 near 35th Ave. The trooper initiated a traffic stop on the white Challenger after the vehicle appeared to swerve toward the officer. The driver of the white Challenger was taken into custody.
Meanwhile, the two other vehicles continued southbound onto the South Mountain L-202. A sergeant located the black Charger, which began fleeing when an attempt was made to stop it. Phoenix Police’s helicopter tracked the Charger from above as ground units pulled back for safety. The chase continued onto the L-202 and I-10 until the Charger stopped at a parking garage near Priest Drive and Southern Ave.
Authorities from DPS, Phoenix Police, and Tempe Police quickly arrived at the location. The driver fled the scene on foot, entering a nearby neighborhood and attempting to hide in a backyard. Officers apprehended the suspect shortly after.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about street racing in the Phoenix metropolitan area, with multiple law enforcement agencies working together to ensure public safety.
