Phoenix, AZ — At approximately 3:00 AM on October 2, 2024, Phoenix Fire crews and Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZ DPS) responded to reports of a vehicle engulfed in flames on the southbound I-17, just south of Thomas Road.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found the vehicle fully ablaze on the right shoulder. Fire crews quickly initiated efforts to extinguish the fire, ensuring the flames were brought under control swiftly.
In response to the situation, responding troopers promptly closed the southbound lanes of the freeway, diverting traffic off the mainline at Thomas Road. Once the fire was extinguished and the situation was under control, the closure was lifted, although traffic remained restricted to the left two lanes.
Fortunately, the vehicle was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
