Phoenix, AZ – A high-speed collision on eastbound Interstate 10 early Sunday morning left a motorcyclist dead and the driver of a speeding sedan in custody. The incident occurred near 43rd Avenue just after 1:00 AM, according to a DPS sergeant at the scene.
Troopers first received reports of a sedan speeding over 100 mph on I-10 near 59th Avenue. Moments later, reports of a fiery crash involving a sedan matching the vehicle’s description and a motorcycle surfaced. Upon arrival, troopers discovered the severely injured rider in the HOV lane, while the motorcycle was found hundreds of feet away, near the 43rd Avenue off-ramp. The sedan involved had come to a stop under the 39th Avenue overpass.
The motorcyclist, who was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, was later pronounced dead. The driver of the speeding sedan, suspected of impairment, was taken into custody at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that the sedan involved in the crash was the same vehicle reported for excessive speeding earlier. Eastbound I-10 is currently closed between the South Mountain 202 interchange and 35th Avenue as detectives from the DPS Vehicular Crimes Unit conduct their investigation. The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the deadly consequences of impaired and reckless driving.
