On the afternoon of Friday, September 20, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred at an automotive repair center on the 13600 block of Quinnault Road in Apple Valley. Deputies from the Apple Valley station responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 4:04 p.m. Upon arrival, they detained Leon Sanchez, who was found armed with a handgun, without incident.
Tragically, two individuals, Frank Portillo and Joshua Augsburger, were found suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, Portillo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Augsburger was rushed to a trauma center where he remains in critical condition.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, have taken over the investigation. Early findings suggest that Portillo and Augsburger confronted Sanchez, and during a heated argument, witnesses reported hearing Portillo issue a threat. As tensions escalated, Sanchez opened fire, striking both men. Sanchez, who possesses a valid Carry Concealed Firearm (CCW) permit issued by San Bernardino County, was detained without further incident.
The investigation remains active, and the case will be reviewed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Owenn Domon from the Specialized Investigations Division at (909) 890-4904.
