North Hollywood, CA — In a tragic turn of events early Monday morning, Los Angeles police officers responding to an assault with a deadly weapon fatally shot a suspect who allegedly pointed a firearm at them. Shortly after the shooting, authorities discovered another man dead in a nearby vehicle.
The incident unfolded around 4:50 a.m. in the 12100 block of Victory Boulevard, near Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Officers responding to the assault call encountered a suspect in the vicinity of Victory Boulevard and Bellingham Avenue. According to Detective Meghan Aguilar of the Los Angeles Police Department, the suspect brandished a handgun at officers, prompting them to exit their vehicle and open fire.
The suspect, identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Sean Griffin, fled the scene and entered a nearby parking structure on St. Clair Avenue. Officers pursued Griffin and established a perimeter around the area. Despite attempts to contain the situation, Griffin exited the structure twice, leading to additional gunfire from police officers. He was ultimately fatally wounded on the north side of the parking structure, where he succumbed to his injuries. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Authorities have not confirmed whether Griffin fired at the officers, and details about his intentions remain under investigation.
In a further development, a second man was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle parked in the same lot. At this time, it is unclear if there is any connection between Griffin and the deceased man.
The California Highway Patrol temporarily closed the Victory Boulevard off-ramps from both directions of the Hollywood (170) Freeway due to the incident. The ramps were reopened later in the day as the investigation continued.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together the details surrounding the events.
