In the early hours of September 14, 2024, a high-speed pursuit in National City ended in a dramatic crash near the entrance to Naval Base San Diego. At approximately 3:00 a.m., a National City Police Department (NCPD) officer observed a vehicle speeding along Main Street and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Instead of complying, the driver fled, turning southbound onto Yama Street, where the vehicle lost a tire.
The driver, struggling to maintain control, attempted to turn left onto the southbound I-5 on-ramp but crashed through the Naval Base’s perimeter fencing and into a nearby drainage ditch. The vehicle was occupied by a juvenile male and a juvenile female, both of whom were pulled from the wreckage unharmed.
After the crash, the female was released to her parent, while the male was handed over to his father but is expected to face charges. The street and on-ramp remained closed for over an hour as authorities secured the scene and initiated their investigation.
This incident highlights the dangers of high-speed pursuits and the swift response by local law enforcement. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are expected to provide further updates regarding potential charges.
