Altadena, CA — A brush fire, fueled by gusting Santa Ana winds, erupted Tuesday evening in Eaton Canyon, rapidly consuming hundreds of acres and destroying multiple structures. Reported at 6:20 p.m. near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive, the fire, initially dubbed the Close Fire but later renamed the Eaton Fire, quickly expanded from 10 to 400 acres by 8 p.m.
Mandatory evacuations were issued for areas north of New York Drive, east of Altadena Drive, and west of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue. Additional evacuations included parts of Arcadia and Pasadena, affecting numerous residents. Evacuation centers were set up at the Arcadia Community Center and Pasadena Civic Center.
Despite reports of people trapped within the burn area, no injuries were confirmed. Crews evacuated a senior center in the fire’s path, with staff pushing residents in wheelchairs to safety.
Crews from various agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service and Los Angeles County, worked to contain the flames and protect critical assets, including chlorine gas cylinders stored by the Pasadena Water and Power Department.
The fire’s rapid spread strained resources already stretched thin by a simultaneous blaze in Pacific Palisades. Schools in several districts canceled classes for Wednesday. A separate fire, the Bert Fire, was reported in Pasadena later that night, with no clear link to the Eaton Fire.
