On the early morning of August 30, 2024, a severe accident unfolded on Interstate 10 near Dysart Road in Goodyear, leading to significant damage and a tragic loss of life. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 AM when a black vehicle, suspected to be a Corvette or Camaro, collided with another vehicle traveling westbound on the interstate.
In an attempt to avoid the initial collision, a nearby semi-truck swerved but ended up striking the median wall. The impact caused the semi-truck to burst into flames, triggering a massive fire. The speeding vehicle involved in the collision also caught fire shortly after.
Firefighters from multiple West Valley cities were dispatched to the scene to combat the extensive blaze and provide aid to any injured parties. The driver of the speeding vehicle, an adult male, fled the scene on foot and was later found by DPS Troopers and Goodyear PD officers off the highway, completely nude. After a brief struggle, officers used a taser to subdue him and took him into custody. He was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Tragically, the driver of the semi-truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, who ran from the crash, will be held in custody pending his release from the hospital. Authorities are investigating impairment as a potential factor in the collision.
Due to the severity of the crash, I-10 was closed in both directions, and traffic was diverted off at Dysart Road. While all eastbound lanes, except the HOV lane, were reopened by around 6 AM, westbound lanes remain closed at Dysart Road as troopers continue their investigation. The closure is anticipated to persist throughout the morning.
