Phoenix, AZ — A tragic head-on collision early this morning on the South Mountain Loop 202 has resulted in the deaths of two drivers. The incident occurred at approximately 2:16 AM when a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes struck another vehicle near Elliot Road.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the collision was initially flagged by a Flux wrong-way detector activation, alerting troopers to the presence of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. Shortly thereafter, ADOT camera operators confirmed that the wrong-way driver had collided head-on with another sedan.
Emergency responders from Phoenix Fire and DPS arrived on the scene to find both vehicles severely damaged. The drivers of both vehicles, both adult males, were trapped inside their cars. Fire crews worked swiftly to extricate the drivers, but despite their efforts, both individuals were pronounced deceased at approximately 2:25 AM.
The northbound lanes of South Mountain Loop 202 remain closed at Elliot Road as investigators work to determine which vehicle was traveling the wrong way at the time of the crash. The closure is expected to last several hours, and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.
