In the early hours of August 10th, a suspect was shot and killed by police officers following a high-risk traffic stop that escalated into a foot pursuit in Phoenix. The incident began at approximately 3:35 AM when officers responded to reports of an aggravated assault near 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street, where shots were fired.
Shortly after, officers located the suspect driving near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road. Officers initiated a high-risk traffic stop, but the suspect refused to comply with commands and fled the scene on foot. Two officers pursued the suspect, who reached into his waistband as they closed in. In response, both officers discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered nearby, confirming the suspect was armed at the time of the confrontation.
Detectives are actively investigating the incident, conducting both an internal review and a criminal investigation. No officers were injured during the encounter.
