San Diego, CA – In the early hours of August 4, 2024, a high-speed pursuit involving the U.S. Border Patrol culminated in a serious accident on Otay Mesa Rd near SR-125, resulting in multiple injuries and a temporary road closure.
At approximately 3:58 a.m., Border Patrol agents noticed a black Mercedes vehicle in an area known for illegal immigrant activity. The agents attempted to intercept the vehicle as it traveled westbound on Otay Mesa Rd from Alta Rd. However, the driver of the Mercedes accelerated rapidly, leading to a dangerous maneuver.
As the pursuit continued, the driver of the Mercedes abruptly veered onto the center median, before re-entering eastbound traffic. The vehicle then collided head-on with a KIA driven by a female motorist. The force of the collision was significant, causing both vehicles to spin and debris to scatter across the roadway.
First responders arrived on the scene shortly after the crash and worked diligently to extricate the victims from the wreckage. One female victim was trapped for over an hour before being freed. The CalFire Battalion Fire Chief reported that there were two individuals with moderate injuries and two with minor injuries. However, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) updated the report to reflect two major injuries and two minor injuries, with one female suffering a broken femur.
Eastbound Otay Mesa Rd remains closed to traffic as the SDPD continues its investigation into the incident. The crash highlights the dangers of high-speed pursuits and their potential consequences for public safety.
