Early this morning, a major incident occurred at the Westfield Plaza Bonita Mall in National City. At approximately 2:48 a.m., a construction crew working on the mall property accidentally severed a large natural gas line while digging for a new water line. The resulting explosion caused a significant fire, engulfing both a Bobcat and an excavator.
Flames were reported to be shooting 15 to 20 feet into the air as emergency crews from San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) worked urgently to cut off the gas supply and control the blaze. The mall property has been closed for the time being to allow for emergency response and safety measures.
Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported in connection with the incident. The cause of the gas line rupture and subsequent explosion is currently under investigation. The mall and surrounding area remain closed as SDG&E and emergency services work to secure the site and ensure that the situation is fully resolved.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
