Corona, Calif. – A tragic collision on State Route 91 in Corona resulted in one fatality and left four others injured late on the night of July 27, 2024. The crash involved two vehicles, a Nissan Altima and a BMW 528i, and occurred on the westbound side of the highway, west of McKinley Street.
At approximately 10:59 PM, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Riverside units were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a crash. Preliminary investigations indicate that the BMW and a Hyundai were disabled and had stopped on the right shoulder, with all occupants standing on a dirt embankment nearby.
According to CHP Officer A. Bourgouin, the driver of the Nissan Altima, a 35-year-old Long Beach resident, was traveling westbound on SR-91 when the vehicle suddenly veered to the right. The Altima collided with the left rear of the stationary BMW, which was subsequently pushed into the path of the five pedestrians standing on the embankment.
Tragically, one of the pedestrians, an occupant of the Hyundai, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The four other pedestrians were rushed to a local hospital, all suffering major injuries.
The driver of the Nissan Altima has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The investigation into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing, and authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward.
