At approximately 4:00 am, a male victim was driving his Mercedes and attempting to make a left-hand turn into his apartment complex at the intersection of 11th Street and A Avenue. Suddenly, a truck pulled up, and two male suspects exited the vehicle, quickly approaching the victim. The suspects managed to force the victim out of his car and attempted to rob him of his jewelry and carjack the vehicle.
However, the situation took a turn when the victim, who possesses a Concealed Weapons Permit (CCW), drew his weapon and fired a shot. Startled, the suspects fled on foot, abandoning their truck at the scene.
Upon receiving the 911 call, police promptly set up a perimeter. Shortly after, a resident reported seeing a male suspect jump over a fence into their backyard. The resident, who had armed himself, was advised by police to remain indoors for his safety.
In response, K-9 units from the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), San Diego Sheriff’s Office (SDSO), and National City Police Department (NCPD) were deployed. Additionally, an SDPD Drone Unit was called in to assist in the search of the cluttered backyard, as the suspect was believed to be armed and dangerous. Earlier, one of the suspects had discarded a handgun onto the street during their escape.
Despite a thorough search with the drones, no suspect was initially found. However, as officers prepared to stand down, an observant officer discovered the male suspect hiding under a vehicle covered with tarps. The suspect had been lying quietly under the vehicle for hours, just 12 feet away from where officers had been stationed.
The suspect ultimately surrendered to the officers without further incident.
The National City Police Department commends the swift response of their officers and the collaboration with SDPD and SDSO in safely apprehending the suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness, both by law enforcement and the community.
