San Diego, July 25, 2024 – A fire broke out early this morning at a homeless encampment along the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the Grand Avenue/Garnet Avenue exit in San Diego. The incident occurred at approximately 5:28 a.m.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were the first to arrive on the scene. Using a fire extinguisher, they were able to put out the main portion of the blaze before the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) firefighters arrived. The firefighters then tackled and extinguished the remaining fire.
Fortunately, no individuals were found at the scene, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges related to homeless encampments and fire safety in urban areas. Local authorities continue to work on solutions to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of all residents.
