In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Houston Police Department (HPD) and Houston Fire Department (HFD) responded to a serious vehicle accident near the intersection of Westpark and S Rice in Houston. A pickup truck reportedly struck a pillar, resulting in a mangled wreck and a male driver trapped inside.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the situation was promptly escalated to an extrication operation. Fire units worked efficiently, freeing the driver from the wreckage within ten minutes. He was then transported to Hermann Hospital, where medical personnel expect him to survive his injuries.
HPD officers from the S Gessner division investigated the incident and discovered that the pickup had come off the elevated lanes of the Westpark Tollway. Precinct 5, contracted with the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA), was requested to assist at the scene.
As a result of the accident, the tollway lanes are currently closed. However, the closure is not expected to be long-term. Commuters are advised to check with HCTRA for the latest updates on lane closures to plan their morning routes accordingly. While it is anticipated that inbound traffic for rush hour will not be significantly impacted, drivers should remain vigilant and informed of any changes.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine the cause. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
