In the early hours of July 7, a routine traffic stop by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) escalated into a high-speed chase, culminating in a collision and multiple arrests.
At approximately 4:15 AM, LASD deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the Atlantic Avenue area, north of the 91 Freeway in Long Beach. According to the LASD, as the deputies approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly reversed, ramming into the patrol car before speeding away from the scene. This act was classified as an assault on a police officer, prompting an immediate pursuit.
The chase continued through the streets of Long Beach, with the suspect’s vehicle weaving dangerously through traffic. The pursuit ended when an LASD unit collided with the fleeing vehicle, bringing it to a halt. The impact left the LASD patrol car totaled and resulted in injuries to two deputies, who were subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Following the crash, four suspects were detained at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
As a result of the incident, all lanes of Atlantic Avenue were temporarily closed to traffic, causing significant disruptions during the morning commute. LASD officials have confirmed that the roadway has since been reopened.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
