The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of several horses running loose on the I-5 freeway on the evening of July 2, 2024. Shortly after the initial reports, it was confirmed that two of the horses had been struck by vehicles. Upon arrival, CHP officers found one horse dead in the High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane and another injured on the slow lane/right shoulder area. Several lanes were closed to manage the situation, leading to heavy traffic in the area.The incident is being handled by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) and the CHP Newhall division.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and seek alternative routes if possible as cleanup and investigation continue.
