San Diego, CA — On Tuesday, January 7, around 10:30 PM, a routine traffic stop escalated into a pursuit in the City Heights area. The incident began near El Cajon Boulevard and 39th Street when San Diego Police Department (SDPD) officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. Initially complying, the driver suddenly fled, prompting a chase.
SDPD’s helicopter unit, ABLE, quickly joined the pursuit, which ended within a minute when the suspect’s vehicle collided with another car near Wilson Avenue and University Avenue. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended near 36th Street and University Avenue with assistance from ground units and nearby SWAT teams. Officers recovered a knife and a gun from the suspect’s fanny pack.
The driver of the struck vehicle was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Identities of those involved have not been released as the investigation continues. The incident showcases SDPD’s effective coordination in managing dangerous situations.
