Phoenix, AZ — In the early hours of January 1, 2025, a chaotic situation unfolded on westbound I-10 near 67th Avenue, involving multiple incidents.
Troopers from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) initially responded to a serious collision between a pickup truck and a red sedan. The pickup reported driving erratically, rear-ended the sedan before rolling over. Both vehicles came to a stop, blocking the left lanes of westbound I-10.
As DPS troopers were assessing the crash, a white Tesla with several occupants stopped at the scene. The driver informed officers that one of the passengers had been shot and was attempting to take the victim to the hospital. The shooting, which occurred elsewhere in Phoenix, left the victim with a leg wound.
In response, DPS shut down the westbound I-10, diverting traffic onto the South Mountain 202. Several Phoenix Fire crews responded to the scene. Two individuals involved in the collision were transported to a trauma center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the gunshot victim was also taken to the hospital.
The freeway closure lasted about one hour. Preliminary investigations suggest impairment may have been a factor in both incidents. The Phoenix Police Department is handling the shooting investigation, while DPS is investigating the collision.
