San Diego Police responded to multiple 911 calls early Sunday reporting a wrong-way driver whose vehicle had become disabled near the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and Utah Street.
Before officers arrived, dispatch received a call from a woman claiming her car had been stolen and was at a location on Ruffin Road. However, GPS tracking placed her near the accident scene.
When officers arrived, they encountered a woman who claimed she had been dropped off by a friend and reiterated that her car had been stolen. Witnesses at the scene contradicted her account, stating they had seen her driving the vehicle.
As officers questioned the woman, a bystander approached her, shouting, “You almost hit me, you shouldn’t be driving drunk!” News cameras captured the exchange.
Officers conducted a “curbside lineup,” where a witness positively identified the woman as the driver. Initially, she resisted participating, citing the presence of news cameras but later complied.
The woman refused to perform field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). She was transported to jail, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities have not released further details about the incident or the woman’s identity at this time.
