December 9, 2025 – Downtown Riverside, CA — New details have emerged in the fatal stabbing that shook downtown Riverside Tuesday afternoon, as authorities announced the arrest of a suspect with an extensive criminal and mental health history.
Riverside Police and Riverside Fire Department crews were initially dispatched around 12:20 p.m. to the area of Market Street and University Avenue after reports of a stabbing on the sidewalk. When first responders arrived, they found an adult male suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim was in full cardiac arrest and was rushed to a hospital with CPR in progress, but later died from his injuries.
Video from the scene showed emergency crews performing CPR, and a knife lying on the sidewalk, believed to be the weapon used in the attack. The suspect fled on foot before officers arrived.
According to updated information reported by The Press-Enterprise, police later identified and arrested John Larry Perryman III, 34, in connection with the killing. Perryman was detained around 5:00 p.m., approximately two miles from the crime scene, and booked on suspicion of murder and assault causing great bodily injury.
