LAKE ELSINORE, CA — A tragic hit-and-run incident on Sunday night resulted in the death of a 35-year-old Fontana man on a southbound I-15 freeway on-ramp in Lake Elsinore, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The identity of the victim has not yet been released by the sheriff-coroner’s bureau.
The discovery was made at 10:15 p.m. on the on-ramp to the southbound 15 Freeway from Main Street in Lake Elsinore.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, wearing dark clothing, was found in an unlit portion of the freeway on-ramp. The CHP reported, “Investigators determined that a Toyota Camry Hybrid from the 2007-2011 model year was driving toward the freeway at an unknown rate of speed and struck the victim, then fled the scene.”
Shortly afterward, the driver of a 2017 Ford Explorer heading towards the freeway on the on-ramp inadvertently ran over the pedestrian. The victim was left in the traffic lane, unseen by the driver of the Explorer, who promptly pulled over and called 911.
Responding to the scene were the Lake Elsinore Police Department, a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department division, and CHP officers.
Evidence of the Camry was found at the scene, assisting investigators in identifying the model and year. CHP is seeking assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the incident and asks for information about the whereabouts of the driver or the Toyota Camry Hybrid involved in the hit-and-run. The CHP emphasizes the illegality of pedestrians walking on a freeway or on-ramp at any time, and recommends that pedestrians wear brightly colored clothing to enhance visibility when walking on roadways.
