Deputy-Involved Shooting in Spring Valley Leaves Armed Suspect Dead

A tense standoff on Friday afternoon ended in a fatal deputy-involved shooting when an armed suspect pointed a gun at officers after an hour-long standoff.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Office responded to a trespassing call on November 15, 2024, at a residence on the 900 block of Leland Street. A woman reported that her ex-boyfriend, described as a 34-year-old Hispanic male, had entered her home through the back door armed with a gun. The man, reportedly under the influence and experiencing mental health issues, was acting erratically. Four children were in the home at the time of the incident.

Deputies arrived on the scene around 3:18 p.m. and secured the woman outside before safely removing the children from the house. The suspect was initially in the backyard, where he fired at least two shots at approximately 4:26 p.m., prompting deputies to take cover and establish a perimeter. The suspect re-entered the home and allegedly fired additional rounds, including possibly through the front door.

At 4:55 p.m., the suspect exited the home, raised his firearm, and pointed it at deputies. Seven deputies opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A black semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene. No officers were injured.

The deputies involved were equipped with body cameras, and law enforcement helicopters recorded the incident. The San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation in accordance with the countywide protocol for officer-involved shootings. The investigation will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, with additional oversight from the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.
