A tragic wrong-way crash occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 near Grant Street at 2:00 AM on November 7, 2024. The incident, which involved two vehicles, has resulted in the death of one driver and left two others in critical condition.
According to Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sergeant Jacob Melki, DPS troopers were alerted to a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-17, near Thomas Road. The Phoenix Police helicopter soon spotted the vehicle, a dark-colored Toyota Prius, as it passed McDowell Road.
The troopers located the wrong-way Prius and paralleled it from the southbound side of the highway. Just minutes later, the Prius collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla near Grant Street.
Upon arrival, troopers found the driver of the Prius, an adult female, unconscious inside the vehicle, and two occupants trapped inside the Corolla. A small fire had started in the engine bay of the Prius, prompting troopers to use fire extinguishers to put it out while extricating all the occupants from their cars.
The troopers immediately began performing CPR on the wrong-way driver, while additional personnel provided aid to the two occupants of the Corolla. Phoenix Fire crews arrived shortly after and transported all three patients to a local trauma center. All three were in extremely critical condition.
Sadly, the female driver of the Prius was pronounced dead later in the hospital. The occupants of the Corolla remain in critical condition.
The crash caused a significant disruption on I-17, with a hard closure for northbound traffic. Motorists were diverted off the mainline at Grant Street while troopers investigated the scene. The closure was expected to last until around 5:00 AM to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
