In the early hours of October 31, 2024, a dramatic incident unfolded at an apartment complex located at 4300 North 35th Avenue when a vehicle crashed through a fence and ended up submerged in the complex’s swimming pool.
Phoenix Police officers received reports of the crash shortly before 2:00 a.m. A patrol officer from the Cactus Park precinct was the first to arrive on the scene, where he discovered the vehicle completely underwater with the driver trapped inside. Without hesitation, the officer retrieved a Halligan pry bar from his patrol car and plunged into the pool.
Demonstrating remarkable bravery, the officer climbed onto the roof of the submerged sedan, broke the sunroof glass, and successfully pulled the driver, an adult male, from the vehicle. Shortly after, Phoenix Fire crews and additional backup officers arrived to assist.
The driver was evaluated by Phoenix Fire and subsequently transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. The officer who rescued him was also evaluated at the scene but declined medical attention.
As details surrounding the cause of the crash remain unclear, the Phoenix Police Dive Team was dispatched to assist in recovering the vehicle from the pool, with a heavy-duty tow truck on standby.
A press statement from Phoenix Police confirmed the events, stating, “Just before 2:00 a.m., officers responded to the area of 4300 North 35th Avenue regarding a vehicle that had crashed into an apartment fence and was in a pool. When officers arrived, they located the vehicle in the pool and extracted the lone adult male occupant. The man was transported to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and officers are still on the scene conducting inquiries. It is currently unknown whether impairment played a role in the crash.
The area will be cleared once the investigation is complete, and the findings will be turned over to detectives.
