A dock worker at The Dana Hotel & Marina was the first to spot a 25-foot catamaran sinking in its slip early in the morning. San Diego City Lifeguards responded promptly, arriving on the scene to assess the situation. After determining that no one was aboard the vessel, they began efforts to pump water out of the boat in an attempt to prevent it from fully sinking. However, these efforts were halted, as the issue appeared to be beyond immediate repair.
The suspected cause of the sinking was linked to water entering through a valve connected to the catamaran’s live bait container. With concerns about potential environmental hazards, such as fuel leakage into Mission Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard was notified to monitor and manage any potential contamination risks. Their involvement ensures that the environmental impact is closely assessed and contained.
At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage to other nearby vessels. The situation serves as a reminder of the critical role of quick action and environmental safeguards in San Diego’s busy marina areas.
