On Sunday, September 15, 2024, at approximately 9:26 p.m., a wrong-way driver caused a fatal head-on collision on the southbound 73 Freeway near Jamboree Road in Newport Beach. Authorities reported that the driver of a Range Rover SUV, traveling at high speed in the wrong direction, collided with a northbound BMW electric sedan. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded after receiving multiple calls about the SUV driving north in the southbound fast lane. The crash occurred just north of MacArthur Boulevard at 9:30 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle engulfed in flames after the impact. Tragically, the wrong-way driver was killed, while the BMW’s driver sustained injuries. The Orange County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene at 10:05 p.m. All southbound lanes were closed as debris covered the freeway, with traffic diverted at Campus Drive. The CHP is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
