A fire that began on Thursday evening around 6 PM, named the Line Fire, has dramatically shifted direction, posing a serious threat to homes in Highland. Originally burning away from the city and into the San Bernardino National Forest, the fire changed course late Thursday night, driven by strong down-canyon winds. The smoke, which initially drifted east, began moving south and southwest, spreading embers and smoke over Highland.
Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blaze, focusing their efforts on keeping the fire from reaching residential areas. Structure defense teams are positioned along Baseline Street, extending down to Tenaya Lane and beyond to Frontera Del Norte. Nighttime helicopter crews are assisting ground firefighters, who are laying hoses and creating handlines throughout the night.
Despite the fire’s proximity to homes, no evacuations have been ordered. Firefighters are making a determined stand to prevent the flames from reaching residential areas. The northern section of the fire continues to burn deep within the rugged terrain of the San Bernardino Mountains.
The cause of the Line Fire remains unknown and is under investigation.
