San Diego, CA – In the early hours of August 1, 2024, a house fire broke out at 5515 Lauretta St, prompting a swift response from the San Diego Fire Department. Firefighters arrived at the scene at approximately 4:58 a.m. to find heavy fire and smoke billowing from the rear of the residence.
The fire crews quickly attacked the blaze and managed to bring it under control within ten minutes, preventing further damage to the surrounding area. Despite the rapid spread of the fire, firefighters were able to prevent the flames from reaching nearby homes.
During the operation, a dog was discovered inside the residence and successfully rescued. The animal appeared unharmed and was safely removed from the dangerous conditions.
A neighbor informed both firefighters and police officers that the house was supposed to be empty, raising suspicions about the presence of anyone inside. Upon investigation, a man was found outside the residence. It was determined that he had been illegally squatting in the house.
The male squatter was detained by police for questioning regarding his presence at the property and any potential involvement in the incident. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) has arrived on the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Their investigation will determine whether the fire was accidental or if any criminal activity was involved.
The fire department emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious activity in vacant homes to prevent similar incidents in the future. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the investigation.
Residents of the area expressed relief that the fire was quickly extinguished and that no injuries were reported. The swift actions of the San Diego Fire Department and the rescue of the dog were praised by the local community.
