WHITTIER, CA,07-31-2025 — A man armed with a blowtorch was arrested Thursday evening, July 31, 2025, after allegedly igniting multiple fires along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Whittier. Los Angeles County Fire Department crews were called around 7:48 p.m. to Lambert Road and 1st Avenue, where they found shrubs and a palm tree burning dangerously close to nearby homes. As firefighters worked to contain the flames, they alerted Whittier Police about a suspected arsonist seen moving along the right‑of‑way, attempting to start additional fires. Neighbors reported the man fleeing north on foot. An OSV photographer later spotted the suspect near Leffingwell Road and Larylyn Drive, carrying a yellow blowtorch and a large bottle of liquor. Whittier police cornered him in front of a liquor store, where he was taken into custody without incident.
