Wilmington,07-09-2025, An urgent rescue operation was launched on Tuesday night following the collapse of a tunnel involved in a sewer construction project in Wilmington. The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. near Figueroa Street and Lomita Boulevard, triggering a multi-agency emergency response involving over 100 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel. Initial reports from emergency scanners indicated that approximately 28 individuals were unaccounted for within the collapsed tunnel or trench. The Los Angeles Fire Department later confirmed that up to 15 workers were initially believed to be trapped underground. At the scene, 30 individuals were medically evaluated; however, none required hospital transport. Rescue crews remained on high alert throughout the night, coordinating a complex search-and-rescue operation that spanned multiple miles beneath the city. The affected tunnel was located nearly six miles south of the main incident command post on North Figueroa Street.
