STUDIO CITY, CA – The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the tragic loss of Deputy Marcos Pena Jr., 31, who was killed early Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle collision on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Studio City. The crash also claimed the life of a female passenger who has not yet been publicly identified. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. near the junction of the 101, 170, and 134 freeways, close to the Tujunga Avenue exit. Preliminary reports state that Deputy Pena and the woman were traveling in a black Kia compact SUV that had stopped in the traffic lanes for unknown reasons. While both occupants were outside the vehicle, a white International box truck collided with the SUV and struck the pair, killing them both at the scene . Pena was off duty at the time of the crash. He had joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on July 14, 2022, and was assigned to the Men’s Central Jail.
