A police investigation is underway following an early-morning incident in which Los Angeles police officers opened fire on a suspect in the Harvard Heights neighborhood, though no one was struck by gunfire. The incident involved a reported armed robbery at a local donut shop and ended with the suspect being tased and taken into custody. At approximately 3:21 a.m. on Wednesday, LAPD officers responded to reports of an armed robbery in progress at a Winchell’s Donut Shop in the 1700 block of Western Avenue, near Venice Boulevard. Callers reported that the suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Christopher Hall, may have been armed and had allegedly assaulted a female employee. Upon arrival, officers were directed to the suspect’s last known location. An LAPD air unit located Hall at a nearby apartment complex, where he was seen running from the scene and attempting to change clothing to avoid detection. Officers on the ground made contact with Hall, who was still armed at the time. According to LAPD officials, Hall refused to drop his weapon and instead pointed it at responding officers, prompting an officer-involved shooting. Though the officers discharged their firearms, Hall was not hit by gunfire. He then attempted to flee the scene by climbing a fence, at which point an officer deployed a Taser, bringing Hall to the ground. Hall was taken into custody without further incident. The firearm he had been carrying was recovered at the scene and later determined to be a black airsoft pistol—a replica resembling a real gun. Hall was transported to a hospital for a precautionary evaluation and was reported to have sustained only minor injuries.
