In the early morning hours of Friday, a high-speed pursuit in Boyle Heights ended in tragedy when a suspect fleeing California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers crashed his silver Aston Martin into a utility pole and later died following a medical emergency during his arrest. The incident began around 3:15 a.m. on May 30, when CHP officers attempted to pull over the vehicle near Indiana Street and Gleason Avenue in East Los Angeles for speeding, clocked at more than 70 miles per hour on surface streets. According to CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig, the driver failed to yield, prompting a pursuit. The pursuit was quickly terminated on the ground due to public safety concerns, but a CHP helicopter continued tracking the suspect. The aerial unit observed the driver crash into a power pole near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Soto Street in Boyle Heights. Despite the severe impact, the man fled on foot, running approximately one block before being tackled by officers. Moments after being detained, the man suffered a medical emergency, which CHP Sgt. Dan Keene described as a likely cardiac arrest. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived on the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
