HOUSTON, TX — A high-speed crash involving five vehicles early Thursday morning has left one person dead and shut down all northbound lanes of Interstate 45 near North Main Street, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD). The collision occurred at approximately 3:12 a.m. on May 29, 2025. Emergency responders from HPD and the Houston Fire Department (HFD) arrived on the scene to find vehicles scattered across all lanes of the northbound I-45 at the 2700 block, near the N Main exit. Authorities confirmed that one individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary details shared by HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division indicate that a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed lost control, triggering the multi-car crash. The driver of that vehicle was reportedly ejected from the car. Investigators found the speedometer of the vehicle locked at 105 miles per hour, underscoring the extreme speed at the time of the collision.HPD shut down all northbound lanes of I-45 and diverted traffic off the freeway at N Main Street while the investigation was underway. The closure caused significant disruptions to early morning traffic in the area.
