A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle in Houston ended in tragedy Thursday evening when the suspect crashed into another vehicle, fatally injuring a civilian and later taking his own life at the scene. At approximately 7:55 p.m., Houston Police Department (HPD) officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in the 8700 block of W Bellfort Avenue. The driver refused to comply, prompting a pursuit that was monitored by HPD’s FOX air unit. The aerial surveillance allowed patrol units to follow from a safe distance. The suspect continued fleeing westbound on W Bellfort until colliding with a civilian vehicle attempting a U-turn. The impact caused the civilian, described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, to be ejected from his vehicle. Simultaneously, the suspect’s vehicle struck a pole, igniting an electrical fire. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts on the injured civilian while Houston Fire Department (HFD) personnel worked to extinguish the electrical fire near the suspect’s vehicle. As emergency crews attempted to extricate the suspect, described as a Black male in his mid-20s, he reportedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and shot himself once. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by HFD. The civilian was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash. The identities of both the suspect and the civilian have not yet been released pending next of kin notification. HPD is continuing its investigation into the incident and the circumstances surrounding the stolen vehicle.
